The Metaldehyde Stewardship Group (MSG) formed in 2008, as an industry led voluntary approach, to promote and encourage best practice with metaldehyde slug pellets, to minimise environmental impacts.
The focus of the MSG since 2008 has been protection of water. In 2017 additional stewardship has been introduced to include steps to enhance protection to birds and small mammals.
The group comprises Adama Agricultural Solutions UK Ltd, Certis Europe B.V., De Sangosse and Lonza.
The campaign has been instrumental in showcasing how agricultural users of slug pellets can influence the future availability of pesticide products that are under threat, by demonstrating that guidelines can be followed and best practices adhered to.
In addition to setting the stewardship guidelines, the MSG continues to work closely with the farming, water and environment industries to develop and implement stewardship approaches with the view of preserving the future of metaldehyde slug pellets.
Regular engagement and support from the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), Association of Independent Crop Consultants (AICC), Crop Protection Association (CPA), National Farmers Union (NFU) and the Voluntary Initiative (VI) is key to developing and implementing stewardship approaches.
